A cam indexer converts continuous rotary input from a motor or gearbox into precise intermittent output rotation using a conjugate cam groove and hardened roller followers. The cam profile drives the output turret through an acceleration and deceleration sequence — the index phase — then locks it mechanically at a fixed angular position during the dwell phase. No external brake or clutch holds dwell position; the groove geometry itself provides the lock. Standard output divisions range from 2 to 24 stations. Positional repeatability falls within ±5 to ±10 arc-seconds depending on cam type, making cam indexers the dominant mechanism for high-speed rotary transfer and assembly automation.
Cam Indexer also known as,cam indexing drives, rotary indexers,is an integral components in automation systems, providing precision motion control needed for various industrial applications.

Industrial application cases with Cam Indexer
Electronics Manufacturing: SMT adhesive dispensing — 6-station PCB carrier indexer
The shaft output couples directly to the dial hub — no flange adapter, no intermediate bearing housing. The 195 mm height envelope rules out a DF flange unit, which requires 55 mm more axial clearance for the pilot register and bolt circle.
Metal Stamping: Transfer press blank feed — 4-station rotary arm indexer
The 2.1 kN·m moment load and 980 N·m shock torque exceed the DS single-groove capacity. The DF double-flange contact pair resists the moment across two axially separated faces. The flange pilot bore distributes the shock torque across the full bolt circle rather than concentrating it at a shaft keyway.
Food & Beverage: Aluminium can seaming — 12-station high-speed seamer turret
480 CPM exceeds the DS 400 RPM and DF 300 RPM limits. The DE dual-eccentric profile is the only cam geometry rated to this speed. The flange output absorbs the seaming reaction torque without shaft deflection. A shaft-output coupling at 310 N·m and 480 CPM would require a 40 mm shaft diameter and a separate outboard bearing, adding 140 mm of axial length the can line cannot accept.
Automotive Powertrain: Camshaft housing boring — 8-station rotary transfer cell
74 kg·m² inertia and 3.5 kN·m tilting moment place this application beyond the DF family’s structural capacity. The DT crossed-roller bearing absorbs both loads within the table column. A flange-output indexer plus a separate rotary table would stack two bearing systems, two alignment datums, and 220 mm of additional machine height.
FAQs about Cam indexer
- What is the difference between index angle and dwell angle in a cam indexer?
Index angle is the degrees of input shaft rotation during which the output turret moves from one station to the next. Dwell angle is the remaining input shaft rotation during which the output turret sits stationary. The two angles sum to 360°. A 120°/240° split means the turret moves for one-third of each input revolution and dwells for two-thirds, giving more stationary time per cycle for process operations.
- What are the main cam indexer types and how do they differ?
The primary cam indexer families divide by cam geometry and output format. DE units use a dual-eccentric groove for the highest cycle rates up to 600 CPM. DS units use a single disc cam for compact inline shaft output up to 400 RPM. DF units use a double-flange disc for higher torque and moment load resistance. DT units integrate the cam mechanism into a table housing with a crossed-roller bearing. DA units use the same table format in an ultrathin body for space-constrained installations. PU units use a polygon cam for the heaviest inertia class above 100 kg·m².
- When should a cam indexer be chosen over a servo-driven rotary table?
Choose a cam indexer when cycle rate exceeds 200 indexes per minute, when positional repeatability must hold without encoder feedback, or when the dwell phase requires absolute mechanical rigidity against cutting or press forces. A servo table offers flexible station counts and programmable dwell times but requires a feedback loop, amplifier tuning, and a holding brake. At high cycle rates, servo inertia matching becomes complex; a cam indexer handles the same load with a fixed-speed motor and no control system overhead.
